The
21st Century Cures Act of 2016
(12/12/16)- President Barack Obama has signed the 21st
Century Cures Act, after it passed the Senate by a 84
to 5 vote, and the House by a 392 to 26 vote.
The Republican sponsors of the Act were Rep. Fred
Upton of Michigan and Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, while the Democrat
sponsors of the act were Rep. Dianne Gette of
Colorado and Senator Patty Murray of Washington.
At a total cost of $6.3 billion, The Cures Act
includes over a billion dollars being allocateded to
the National Institute of Health (NIH) for the “Cancer Moonshot”. The NIH will
use this funding to make grants to institutions or individuals doing research
in the war against cancer.
The Cures Act would also increase access to mental
health care which has been a bipartisan effort since the fatal shooting in 2012
of 20 children and 6 adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton,
Conn.
The act will also speed up the approval process for
new drugs and medical devices by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
